The initial movement of a hanging string is revisited through an integral transformation, the analysis of the integral solution allows to obtain some exact solutions for the string profile and to understand the physical meaning of the solutions. Finally, approximate solutions to the integral formula are found and compared with the numerical solution of the problem.
