In this paper we present the generalized transmission matrix method (TMM) for the theoretical design and analysis of the microwave absorbers. Within the framework of this method, each layer of the absorbing structure is analyzed independently and then characterized in terms of a multidimensional transmission matrix. The reflection, transmission and impedance characteristics of the layer with respect to the incident wave are embedded within the matrix. The complete characterization of the absorbing structure is obtained by cascading the individual matrixes of the layers. We obtain the impedance of each layer of the absorbing structure and its combination, and use the Smith chart to show the impedance components, which give a clear physical picture of the impedance change of the absorbers to reach the impedance match. By using the proposed TMM, two patterned graphene microwave absorbers are analyzed to provide physical insight into the fundamentals of the proposed graphene-based absorbers. It is found that the graphene can achieve adjustable absorption through controlling the surface resistance.
