Figure 4 in the original attempted to illustrate two potentials where there is no bounce solution. However, the right hand panel in that figure showed a case where the intermediate vacuum had higher energy than the false vacuum from which the tunneling begins. In such a case, the overshoot-undershoot argument works and there is always a bounce solution. The correct shape of potential where this argument fails is shown here in figure 1.
