Symmetric Informationally Complete Positive Operator Valued Measures (SIC POVM) are families of d2 unit vectors in the complex Cartesian space C such that the complex lines associated to them are equiangular and maximally angularly separated. We characterize SIC POVMs as minimizers for the trace of any strictly convex function of the Gram matrix associated to their orthogonal projectors. This result extends several known extremal properties of SIC POVMs and is motivated by an application in fiber optics.
