Background: Carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae (CPE) are widely disseminated, and their prevalence is increasing globally. Rapid detection of carbapenemase enables effective treatment and proper infection control measures. The purpose of this study was to detect CPE in clinical isolates with the Rapidec Carba NP test. Methods: The study was conducted on clinical samples obtained from outpatients and hospitalized patients. Enterobacteriaceae were screened for carbapenemase production by the ertapenem disk diffusion and broth microdilution methods. Then the confirmatory modified Hodge test and Rapidec Carba NP test were performed for comparison. Results: Among the 60 Enterobacteriaceae isolated, 25 (41.6%) were resistant by both disk diffusion and the modified Hodge test whereas 27 (45%) were resistant by broth microdilution and the Rapidec Carba NP test. Conclusion: The Rapidec Carba NP test provides rapid, accurate detection of carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae with overall sensitivity of 100% and specificity of 94.3%.
