See Wiesmann and de Leeuw (doi:10.1093/brain/awz408) for a scientific commentary on this article. Hippocampal vascularization patterns vary between individuals. Using 7 Tesla time-of-flight angiography, Perosa et al. examine the impact of these differences in elderly adults with and without cerebral small vessel disease. A mixed hippocampal supply, as opposed to a single one, provides a hippocampal vascular reserve that protects against cognitive impairment.
