Alopecia areata (AA) is a chronic inflammatory disorder typically characterized by non-scaly, discrete patches of non-scarring hair loss. While recent research has shown a clear link between AA and anxiety and depression, the association of AA with other psychiatric co-morbidities has been poorly studied. In this National Institutes of Health database study, we show AA to be significantly associated with alcohol use disorder, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, and insomnia. Dermatologists may be uniquely situated to screen for these previously under-recognized co-morbidities and refer to mental health services when appropriate.
