Naphthenic acids (NAs) in petroleum pollute aquatic environments and can disrupt hormone activity. Male frogs exposed to NAs had disrupted testicular function and suppressed mating behaviours, despite appearing otherwise healthy. These effects were reversed after the frogs returned to clean water, suggesting that contaminated ecosystems can be recovered.
