Body condition-dependent risk-taking is observed in many animal taxa but is little explored in cetaceans. We used model simulations to explore how uncertainties surrounding this behaviour and the metabolic physiology of deep-diving cetaceans may be limiting our understanding of the energetic consequences of anthropogenic disturbance.
