What a difference 40 years makes! July 2017 marks the 40th (Ruby) anniversary of NEUROSURGERY. We also pay tribute to the transition of the inaugural editor – Robert H. Wilkins, MD whose pioneering efforts led to the birth of the journal. NEUROSURGERY and the CNS owe him, and his wife, Gloria, a debt of gratitude. Their combined toils from the journal headquarters based in their home has become the stuff of CNS legend. May his soul rest in peace. To commemorate his legacy we have published obituaries from the CNS and the UNC-Duke Departments of Neurosurgery. We have resurrected the cover of Vol 1, Issue 1 July/August 1977 and Dr. Wilkins’s first editorial where he articulated the key elements that would define the emergence and future of the journal during its early years. Forty years and 4 Editors-in-Chief on, that vision remains undimmed. We may have crossed the Rubicon, only time will tell.
