Metabolic enzymes possess noncanonical functions including protein kinase activities in regulating a variety of cellular processes. A new study demonstrates a surprising moonlighting function of a metabolic enzyme fructose-1,6-bisphosphatase 1, which serves as a protein phosphatase to directly dephosphorylates histone H3 and thus regulates gene expression.
