Cocksfoot mottle virus (CfMV) was discovered in Ohio wheat during a 2016 field survey utilizing RNA-Seq to identify virus-like sequences. Virus sequences were confirmed by reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and Sanger sequencing, and CfMV was transmitted to orchardgrass and passaged to wheat to isolate virus. This is the first report of CfMV in Ohio, and the first report of CfMV naturally infecting wheat.
