Pittosporum tobira is an evergreen tree wildly distributed in China, Korea, and Japan. In July 2015, necrotic leaf lesions were observed on P. tobira growing in six locations in Anqing, east China. The pathogen was recovered from the diseased leaves and identified as Alternaria tenuissima on the basis of morphological characters and sequence analyses of rDNA-ITS and histone 3 nucleotide sequences. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of A. tenuissima causing leaf spot on P. tobira in China. Since the A. tenuissima infections pose a serious threat to P. tobira, correct identification of the pathogen of this disease is essential for developing effective control strategies.
