Objectives: Overweight or obesity is associated with IFG and diabetes. However, epidemiological evidence is limited, especially in Shenzhen of China where the economy is one of the most developed area. We sought to understand the prevalence of overweight or obesity and pre-diabetes in school-age children and adolescents in Shenzhen of China. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study on the first grade, seventh grade and tenth grade students from 17 elementary and high schools. A total of 7,519 participants were investigated and the health examination were conducted. The health data were collected and analyzed according to the BMI classification of 2007 WHO growth reference and diagnostic criteria for fasting plasma glucose (FPG) and HbA1c for school-aged children and adolescents. The crude and standardized prevalence of chronic diseases with 95% confidence interval (95% CI) were estimated. Results: Among the 7,519 subjects aged 6–17 years, the abnormal rates of FBG, HbA1c and both FBG and HbA1c were 1.49% (95% CI: 1.21- 1.77) 8.72% (95% CI: 8.08- 9.36) and 9.80% (95%CI: 9.13- 10.47), respectively. Of 19.6% the subjects BMI was in the overweight and obesity range, 12.8% was overweight and 6.8% was obese respectively. Male had a higher rate of abnormal FPG when compared with that of female (P = 0.001), but the rate of abnormalities in male decreased with age, while the proportion of women increased (all Ptrend > 0.05). The correlation between BMI and pre-diabetes was a u-shaped curve, an indicator of pre-diabetes in people who were underweight and obese. Conclusion: Abnormal blood glucose, overweight and obesity in children and adolescents of Shenzhen is concerning. Early diagnosis and treatment of pre-diabetes is imperative.
