Objectives: It has been recently shown that neutrophil and lymphocyte ratio (NLR) might be a useful marker to predict cardiovascular events. We aimed to investigate the relationship between NLR and left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) in patients with hypertension. Methods: This study included 386 hypertensive patients hospitalized in Department of Cardiology, Tianjin Medical University General Hospital from July to September 2015,the patient's basic characteristics, laboratory parameters and echocardiography were collected. We used Mann-Whitney test, multivariate binary logistic regression analysis of the relationship between NLR and left ventricular hypertrophy in patients with hypertension, The relationship between left ventricular mass index (LVMI) and NLR was analyzed by linear regression, The receiver operator characteristic (ROC) curve was used to judge the diagnostic efficacy of NLR in LVH. Results: NLR in LVH group was 2.635 (1.8975, 3.59) was significantly higher than the control group 2.19 (1.72,3.03),The difference was statistically significant (P = 0.002, < 0.05); On multivariate logistic regression analysis, NLR (OR = 1.176, 95% confidence interval = 1.007–1.373, p = 0.041) as well as Age,BMI,SBP,CRP were associated with LVH. In addition, The levels of NLR were 2.23 (1.73,3.02), 2.04 (1.67,3.64), 2.66 (1.96,3.67), 2.60 (1.875,3.375) in normal conformation, concentric remodeling, eccentric hypertrophy and concentric hypertrophy P = 0.014 (P < 0.05). We further found that NLR showed a positive correlation with LVMI p = 0.007 (p < 0.05). The cutoff value of the NLR obtained by ROC curve was 2.185 for the prediction of LVH (sensitivity: 68.9%, specificity: 50%). Conclusion: In patients with hypertension, NLR may be a useful indicator of LVH.
