Objectives: To investigate the prevalence status of hypertension and the current management in the very old in Gansu Province. Methods: Total 1105 individuals aged over 80 were investigated to complete the questionnaire and physical examination by stratified sampling in 14 regions of Gansu Province. Results: ¢ÙThe prevalence of hypertension in the very old in Gansu Province was 74.32%. Male crude morbidity of hypertension was 73.24% and female crude morbidity of hypertension was 75.52%.¢ÚThe total rates of awareness, treatment and control of hypertension were 52.02%, 39.19% and 17.83%, respectively, which were significantly higher in urban areas than in rural areas. The prevalence of hypertension in urban areas residents was 73.80% while the rural areas was 74.95%.¢ûThere was no significant difference was found between the incidence of hypertension complications when the target blood pressure was 140/90mmHg, 150/90mmHg and 160/90mmHg respectively (P < 0.01).¢ÜOnly 51.16% of the very elderly hypertensive patients accepted hypertension management, 39.19% of the patients took medications, and of which 28.35% receiving drugs combination therapy. Only 54.52% of all patients who took medications had good medication compliance and the hypertension diagnosis approach was different obviously in the very old hypertensive patients in urban and rural areas.¢Ý Traditional chinese compound medicine was the most popular antihypertensive drugs and there exist the unreasonable phenomenon in agent selection. Conclusion: The hypertension prevalence in the very old in Gansu Province was higher while hypertension awareness, treatment and control rates were lower. The low coverage of hypertension management plays a little part. And the target BP of the very old hypertensive patients need further studies with a larger sample to make sure.
