Objectives: The present study was conducted with the main aim of finding the prevalence of hypertension and its risk factors in northern part of India. Methods: A survey was conducted on 24 centres in 18 districts of northern India during 6 months period between June to December. A predesigned Performa was made and filled by all the subjects and clinical measurements like BMI, cholesterol levels etc were taken. Their blood pressures were measured and noted. Every women has been measured blood pressure twice with electronic BP monitoring instrument and second reading was taken. SPSS software was used for analysis. Results: The prevalence of hypertension came out to be 19% in the age group 19 to 23 yrs, the 26 % in the age group 23–30 yrs age group and 23% in above 30 yrs age group. Majority of pregnant women 13.1% were detected hypertensive in third trimester followed by 2nd trimester 7.3 % and 2.6% were detected hypertensive for the first time in first trimester Conclusion: The prevalence of hypertension in pregnant women was found to be 23 per cent in northern part of India. As pregnancy is a condition of physiological insulin resistance which is also a risk factor for hypertension
