Mean Arterial Pressure (MAP) is often used as a surrogate for perfusion pressure. The definition of hypotension in pediatric patients (<5th percentile) is based on the assumption of normal distribution of measured systolic blood pressures in outpatients. No data is currently available for age-specific MAP for hospitalized children. Our objective was to develop age-specific MAP distribution curves for hospitalized children, and compare MAP-based threshold of hypotension to published systolic definition of shock.
