We, too, found it interesting that even with a small sample size, the strategies to sustain humanistic practice diverged among internal medicine physicians and surgeons. However, we were not necessarily surprised to discover these— albeit subtle—differences. A distinction should be made between the attitudes that foster and habits that sustain humanism. In the latter, there may be differences between the clinical work environments that result in unique strategies to engage humanistic practice and prevent burnout over time. For example, the singular and hierarchical nature of the operating theater may differ significantly from bedside rounds in the medical intensive care unit or outpatient clinic.
