440 www.ccmjournal.org March 2020 • Volume 48 • Number 3 in the same measure, our opportunities have increased to use integrated databases as a fundamental step to improve our knowledge of the nature and status of the real-life settings we investigate (14, 15). Reliable tools are also needed to identify patients and stratify their risk with prognostic accuracy, using scores for hospital sepsis mortality and other outcome measures among patients with a suspected infection (16). The results of this study should be interpreted in the context of its design and form the basis for hypothesis generation to encourage rigorous research from the medical and scientific communities in a future that will clarify how to improve the incorporation of appropriate decisions about sepsis and its effective treatment into the care of critically ill patients.
