Previous data from the Alexandria hospital-based cancer registry (Bedwani et al., 1993) showed a remarkably higher proportion of bladder cancer to the total cancer incidence in the city of Alexandria compared with Finland, USA, Australia and China. The percentage of bladder cancers on total cancers in men in the late 1980s was 17.5% in Alexandria, 8.3% in Connecticut (USA), 5.7% in Western Australia, 5.3% in Finland and 2.9% in the city of Shangai.
