in the manicure, she reapplied the acrylic nailsto herself, and also applied them to her daughter, allowing for generalized lesions. She had previously been exposed to long-lasting nails in a nail salon. The patient was patch tested with the Spanish baseline series and an acrylate/artificial nails series (Chemotechnique Diagnostics, Vellinge, Sweden) on Finn Chambers on Scanpor tape (SmartPractice, Phoenix, AZ). The test yielded positive reactions to 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate (++), ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (++), 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) (+++), and hydroxypropyl methacrylate (+ +) on days 2 and 4. 2-Hydroxyethyl methacrylate was present in the composition of the acrylic liquid—as shown in the label— bought by the patient. Finally, she was diagnosed as having severe allergic contact dermatitis (ACD), with secondary generalization, caused by an acrylic nail home kit. Nowadays, the main cause of sensitization to acrylates is the use of different nail aesthetic techniques, an epidemic among beauticians that also affects consumers. The recently commercialized long-lasting nail polish kits for domestic use, available online and in multiple stores with no age limits, have shown to be the cause of ACD, but there are no previous reports of
