Utilization of the nasopharyngeal swab for phenol application in a nail matricectomy provides an inexpensive, more precise, and effective application of the phenol into the lateral horn region without incision of the proximal nail fold. The cost per applicator is approximately 30 cents and usually 2 to 3 applicators are required. The calcium alginate on the nasopharyngeal swab does not affect the phenol and it may aid in hemostasis. In the experience of the authors, patients tolerate the procedure well with significantly less damage to surrounding tissue and no reduction in efficacy. Morbidity due to inadvertent application of phenol to the nail folds is also improved, resulting in less discomfort, drainage due to epidermal slough, and recovery time. References
