According to a recent study, close to 25% of nonmelanoma skin cancers in theUnitedStates isdiagnosed by the age of 54 years. Considering the fact that the diagnosis of alkaptonuria is often delayed until the fourth or fifth decade of life (our patient was diagnosed at the age of 52 years), it is likely that MMS surgeons will encounter this patient population before the diagnosis of alkaptonuria is rendered. If the aforementioned histopathologic findings are encountered duringMMS, it is prudent to perform a physical examination of the eyes and ears as well as ask additional questions regarding the patient’s clinical and family history focusedon colorofurine, symptomsofarthritis orheart failure, and other symptoms that may otherwise give clues to a diagnosis.
