The vertical mattress stitch is also called “Donati stitch” by Mario Donati, one of the foremost European surgeons of the early 20th century. This stitch is performed when there is a tension between the borders of a surgical wound or when the surgical wound is located in an area of frequent tension (e.g., lumbar-dorsal zone). Donati stitches are also performed when the wound borders tend to bend inward. A characteristic of theDonati stitches and of the horizontal mattress stitch as well is letting the wound borders bend outward, to allow a better look of the scar after its physiological shrinkage. The Donati stitches can, however, cause ischemia of the surgical wound borders, and for this reason, it is not recommended in case of wounds on face or on the décolleté.
