Patients undergoing Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS) can experience anxiety throughout the procedure day. Accompanying family or friends (referred to as “companions”) also can experience perioperative anxiety, although this has not been previously studied in Mohs specifically. Prior methods studied to decrease perioperative anxiety for patients undergoing MMS include listening to music, handholding, and using stress balls. Art activities and art therapy have been proven to reduce anxiety in other areas of medicine, but little research indicates whether art activities help reduce anxiety during MMS waiting periods.
