Finally, the goal of our study was to determine if HFNO alone can fulfil the criteria for pre-oxygenation in the operating room. For clinical practice, the response supported also by recent studies, is definitely no. In contrast, HFNO is an efficient method for apnoeic oxygenation increasing the margin of safety during orotracheal intubation. Importantly, pre-oxygenation is clearly defined in anaesthesia practice but is different from apnoeic oxygenation.
