To the Editor: S omatic symptom disorder is characterized by the somatic symptoms that are distressing or significantly disruptive in daily life. Treatment of the chronic pain in somatic symptom disorder is often unsatisfactory; insufficient pain control may have a significant influence on patients' jobs, daily activities, and the quality of life. A recent review of management of somatic symptom disorder indicated that clinicians consider antidepressants to deal with predominant pain. However, the review did not mention the type of antidepressants to use. We report a case of facial pain in somatic symptom disorder that responded to duloxetine. Written informed consent was obtained from the patient for publishing this report.
