Editorial Comment: In this PubMed based literature review the authors determined that the risk of a radiation induced secondary malignancy from performing computerized tomographic urography was not insignificant. In fact, for low risk patients the rate of missing an upper tract malignancy by obtaining a renal ultrasound was exceedingly low. In the future I believe that renal ultrasound may be considered as an alternative to standard computerized tomographic urography in select low risk patients with gross hematuria. Certainly the potential risks of secondary malignancy should be taken into consideration.
