Preceptors play an integral role in support of new clinical staff members. Development of preceptors through education and training to function effectively in the role is essential. A primary role of the nursing professional development (NPD) practitioner is individualizing the training of a novice preceptor in order to support them while working with a new nurse. Some organizations have structured, planned courses offeredperiodically throughout the year to train novice preceptors in their role. This centralized approach to preceptor development is a good strategy to support preceptors; however, there are times when a novice preceptor is needed to orient a new staff member, and the timing of the centralized preceptor course does not coincide with the need for a preceptor.
