Part II of the “Preceptors Leading theWay” series focuses on strategies for developing communication, cultural intelligence, and authenticity skills, as well as leading through change and versatility. Part I was published in the September/October 2019 issue of the Journal for Nurses in Professional Development. Preceptors often struggle with the concept that they are informal leaders within their organization. However, nursing professional development (NPD) practitioners must nurture this role of the preceptor by creating opportunities that develop the essential skills of a successful informal leader. By doing so, the NPD practitioner improves the preceptor’s leadership abilities. In addition, by advocating for institutional recognition of the preceptor’s role as an informal leader, the NPD practitioner enables a framework that cultivates increased preceptor confidence and morale.
