he fourth edition of the nursing professional develTopment (NPD) scope and standards (Harper & Maloney, 2022) aligns very closely with Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice, Fourth Edition (American Nurses Association [ANA], 2021). As a result of this alignment, all the numbers for the standards of professional performance were changed except for Standard 7, Ethics, and Standard 12, Leadership. New standards have been added, standards’ names were modified, and some existing standards from the previous edition have been incorporated into other standards. These changes are shown in Table 1. For example, the new standards include Standard 5-B, Health Teaching andHealth Promotion; Standard 8, Advocacy; Standard 9, Respectable and Equitable Practice; Standard 10, Communication; and Standard 18, Environmental Health. The previous column in this series addressed the NPD standards of practice, Standards 1 through 6, which delineate “the how” by which the NPD practitioner applies the nursing process to NPD initiatives (Dickerson & Durkin, 2022). Standards 7 through 18 comprise the standards of professional performance and describe the competent level of behaviors for NPD practitioners in their professional role.
