Copyright © 2020 Wolters Kluw club, this randomized controlled trial raised many discussions among our surgical colleagues. We thank the authors for bringing this important topic to our attention, for which we have two comments to make. First, when we looked at the intraoperative results the most striking comparison is in the technique of the creation of the ileocolic anastomosis itself, that is, handsewn or stapled. Rather than comparing the 2 surgical procedures (IIA and EIA) are we instead comparing the results of the handsewn anastomosis against using the stapler? Furthermore, although the patients were randomized there were notable differences in the preoperative data. In the EIA group, they were of higher American Society of Anaesthesiology Physical Status Classification System (ASA) grades (2 or 4) than the IIA group (57% vs 47%). There was also a higher percentage of patients in the EIA
