To the Editor: W e read with interest the retrospective study by Wall and Ortega comparing the outcomes of children aged 5 to 10 years of age who underwent appendectomy by adult trauma surgeons versus pediatric surgeons. The authors found similar complication rates but a greater rate of laparoscopic procedures and decreased duration of stay in the cohort treated by trauma surgeons. They concluded that treatment of acute appendicitis in this age group by trauma surgeons was safe and had several clinically pertinent benefits. Although the data presented support the safe and expeditious treatment of young pediatric appendicitis patients by trauma surgeons, we noted several concerns with the remaining conclusions and suggest opportunities for enhanced analyses.
