RM: I am convinced that several diseases that currently require a transplant will be cured or even prevented in near future. The number of artificial heart implantations performed as destination therapy will increase significantly. But not to worry, there will still be enough work for transplant surgeons. The major challenge in the future will be to compensate for the ever-decreasing number of “ideal” donors by using “nonideal” donors, live donors or donors after circulatory death. I am, however, pessimistic when it comes to the two ‘Holy Grails’ of transplantation, xenotransplantation and the induction of specific immune tolerance. Together with many
