A modified generalized liquid drop model with the proximity 77 parametrization is used for studying the alpha decay of superheavy nuclei in the range $104\ensuremath{\le}Z\ensuremath{\le}118$. The spontaneous fission (SF) half-lives are computed using a new formula which depends on the shells effect (${E}_{\mathrm{shell}}$) and the mass inertia (${I}_{\mathrm{rigid}}$). The modes of decay are predicted by comparing ${T}_{1/2}^{\ensuremath{\alpha}}$ with ${T}_{1/2}^{\mathrm{SF}}$ and are compared with the experimental observations. These studies may induce further investigations in the superheavy region.
