In this article, a fault diagnosis scheme is developed for open-circuit faults in dual three-phase permanent magnet synchronous motor (DTP-PMSM) drives based on adaptive fault-tolerant control. First, the adaptive fault-tolerant mechanism of dual three-phase PMSM drives is analyzed. On this basis, an adaptive fault-tolerant control based on half-sine phase-locked loop is proposed to avoid fault disturbance and create the preconditions for the proposed fault diagnosis scheme. After an open-circuit fault occurs, the adaptive fault-tolerant control scheme will make the DTP-PMSM drive enter fault-tolerant operation automatically. The fault diagnosis is fulfilled by matching the practical data from adaptive fault-tolerant operation and the theoretical data, which greatly improves the diagnosis precision and avoids misdiagnosis. The experiments have been conducted to prove the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.
