By using the coupled-mode theory, an optical coupling system, which consists of a waveguide and a periodically patterned microring resonator, is modeled and the mode splitting properties are investigated theoretically and numerically. Mechanism of the mode splitting is the decay of the resonant modes supported by the microring resonators into the waveguide through direct and indirect coupling processes, which splits the degenerated modes. We also derive the transmission coefficient of the coupling system. All the results obtained are confirmed by the finite-difference time-domain method.
