This paper analyzes the ultrasonic modulation of coherent light in Raman–Nath acousto-optic diffraction. We find that the frequency shifts of the diffracted light cause the periodic variation of the ultrasound-modulated light intensity with time. Additionally, the phase shifts of the diffracted light result in the periodic variation of the ultrasound-modulated light intensity along the ultrasound beam.
