We have studied the effect of electrode spacing in a bottom contact multilayer lateral metal-insulator-organic semiconductor-insulator-metal (MIOSIM) photodetector. Measured results show that the darkcurrent and photocurrent of the lateral MIOSIM photodetector are independent of the lateral spacing between the electrodes, which is in contrast to previously reported lateral organic photodetectors. Also, the ratio of darkcurrent and photocurrent remains constant for a range of optical illumination intensities and biasing voltages. We conclude that the conduction path for both the photocurrent and darkcurrent in the reported lateral MIOSIM photodetector is primarily due to vertical charge transport starting at the metal electrodes and reaching the organic semiconductor layer through a polystyrene (PS) intermediate interface layer.
