Energy efficient data transmission is a crucial task in wireless sensor networks. Wake-up radio (WuR) communication offers big potential here, rendering pure asynchronous communication possible. Two different approaches of WuR communication are presented here and a dedicated hardware implementation is proposed. By assessing the performance concerning energy efficiency for both approaches, their impact on the number of payload data bits and the number of nodes in communication range is revealed. A decision guidance is provided based on the parameters of a specific application scenario.
