No simple error-rate formula is available to high-order equal-gain combining (EGC) although it is an open issue traceable to Lord Rayleigh. In this letter, we derive a polynomial error-rate formula for 4~8th EGC in independent identically-distributed (iid) Rayleigh fading, with its coefficients provided in lookup tables and its base simply related to the branch signal-to-noise ratio. The polynomial formula enjoys fast convergence and 48 terms suffice to achieve the accuracy of 10−9 or higher. It is easy to use, just like a handbook formula.
