In this paper, the causal cognitive interference relay channel (CCIRC) is considered. The CCIRC is obtained from the classic cognitive interference channel by introducing a full-duplex relay that has causal and noisy access to the transmitted signals and aids the communication between the two users. For this channel model, a simple upper bound on the capacity is initially established. Then, we derive an achievable rate region that jointly applies cooperative Han–Kobayashi rate splitting, block Markov encoding, superposition coding, Marton’s binning encoding, and backward decoding. In particular, these bounds are derived for both discrete memoryless model and Gaussian channel. Further, both our theoretical and numerical results indicate that the derived achievable rate region encompasses all known available results in the literature.
