This brief addresses the issue of devising a fuzzy adaptive second-order sliding mode (SOSM) controller for a type of nonlinear systems. First of all, the fuzzy logic systems are adopted to dynamically approximate the unknown functional bounds of uncertainties. Subsequently, a control strategy of fuzzy adaptive SOSM on the basis of the backstepping-like technique and the fuzzy adaptive control is developed. It is strictly proved via the Lyapunov theory that the resultant whole system is finite-time stable. Comparative simulation results confirm that under the proposed method, the states can be rapidly regulated to zero and meantime the chattering problem can be alleviated.
