In this article, a novel synthetic aperture radar (SAR) microwave imaging technique for detecting target objects inside the layered media, utilizing the piecewise Riccati equation-based reconstruction scheme, is proposed. Here, the proposed scheme combines the standard Riccati equation-based reconstruction algorithm with the equivalent time domain approach for accurately estimating the electrical (permittivity and conductivity) properties and thickness of individual layers of the stratified media. For this purpose, the initial permittivity profile of the stratified media is first obtained using the equivalent time domain approach. Afterward, the retrieved initial profile is employed as a priori information in the Riccati equation-based reconstruction scheme in a piecewise manner to obtain accurate electrical properties and thickness of the layered media. The proposed imaging scheme provides a quite accurate reconstruction of the permittivity profile of the layered media compared to earlier approaches, such as the conventional Riccati equation-based algorithm or the equivalent time domain approach. The major novelty of this work lies in the fact that the proposed imaging scheme is finally integrated with the SAR algorithm, which facilitates a quite accurate detection of the target buried deep inside the layered media.
