The transmission characteristics of a 1-D plasma photonic crystal (PPC) at a frequency band lower than plasma frequency are studied. We show, through the simulation, that the complex behaviors of the transverse electric (TE) mode-negative bandgaps in the 1-D PPCs are strongly related to whether the surface lattice resonance (SLR) occurs or not, in which the localized plasmon resonance and Bragg resonance play an important role. In addition, an approximate method, whose predicted results are verified by simulation, is used to describe the generation process of SLR. These works provide a new idea for the design of microwave devices based on PPCs.
