Australian and New Zealand Journal of Public Health 335 © 2017 The Authors Every year, Australia receives about 70,000 applications for humanitarian visas.1 Those who apply have often experienced persecution in their home countries. The government’s policies to address these applications have been controversial for decades due to claims that they violate Australia’s human rights’ obligations. They frequently undergo revision, each time sparking fierce public debate.
