Fluid‐induced hypervolemia may stimulate the release of natriuretic peptides and cause degradation (shedding) of the endothelial glycocalyx layer. Sevoflurane is believed to protect the glycocalyx, but the importance of using sevoflurane to prevent shedding during routine surgery is unclear.
