We accept that euthanasia may be a considered decision made by people with terminal and progressive illnesses. We would not proscribe addiction as a reason for performing euthanasia, but we are uneasy that physicians may assent too readily to such requests if they do not appreciate the difficult social and interpersonal situations in which people with alcohol and drug problems find themselves.
