After kidney transplantation, immunosuppressive treatment disturbs the individual balance between virus replication and the humoral and cellular immune response resulting in an elevated incidence of severe viral complications due to primary infection or reactivation. Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infections can lead to CMV disease and graft dysfunction (1) whereas BK polyomavirus (BKPyV) nephropathy is one of the most frequent causes of graft failure (2).
